A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND tells the story of a mathematically gifted British teen on the autism spectrum as he prepares to compete in an international math Olympics. Nathan Asa Butterfield is gifted at math but struggles with relationships, including with his caring but overwhelmed mother Julie Sally Hawkins. Nathan has the more functional form of autism once known as Aspergers but he is also still struggling with the trauma of the accidental death of his father Michael Martin McCann, who was killed in a car wreck while Nathan was in the car. His mother has done her best to raise him as a single parent but Nathan was never as close to her as his dad and it has been difficult for them both. A chance to enter the International Math Olympiad brings an unconventional math coach into Nathan’s life and introduces him to other mathematically gifted kids. There is quite a bit of comedy and even some romance in this pleasant, crowd-pleasing British film. While it follows a conventional story arc, A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND also accurately depicts some of the difficulties of raising a child on the autism spectrum. Director Morgan Mathews loosely based the story on a boy he met while filming his documentary “Beautiful Young Minds.” This British film was originally named “X + Y” when it played at the Toronto film festival, which is a clever mathematical title but a little obscure in telling an audience what the film is about. Nathan is indeed a brilliant young mathematical mind, and in fact sees everything in his world through a mathematical filter. Although he is a nice looking boy, Nathan is shy and the only thing he seems to care about is math. Despite his shyness with others, he is a bit of tyrant towards his eager-to-please mother, treating her with coldness although he clearly knows he needs her too. He is picky about his food, and his obsession with prime numbers leads him to demand that he have an exact number of shrimp in his Chinese take-out, berating his long-suffering mother if she gets it wrong. His mother is so devoted to her still-grieving son that she takes his abuse without complaint, and even seeming to feel inadequate to the task of raising him. When Nathan’s school recommends a math coach to prepare him for the math competition, a new factor changes the toxic social dynamics. Martin Humphreys Rafe Spall is a once-promising math prodigy who didn’t quite live up to potential. Now teaching in the middle school, he is an unconventional wise-cracker and a bit of a slob, who also suffers from muscular dystrophy. Still he makes a connection with Nathan and the two become close. The pair travel to a math camp in Taiwan, where Nathan meets other mathematical-gifted kids, including another boy with autism, a girl who plays piano and introduces him to the links between music and math, and a Chinese girl, Zhang Mei Jo Yang, under pressure to succeed by her family. The film moves smoothly back and forth between comic and drama scenes, never becoming overly sentimental. The British cast is splendid, but Eddie Marsan nearly steals the show as Richard, the head of the British math team and a competition official, a sharp, funny fellow who cuts through a lot of distractions to get straight to the heart of the matter. Fine photography and the film’s nice pacing enhance the experience. One does not have to have an interest in math to enjoy A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND’s appealing, intelligent, informative story with a surprisingly realistic peek inside life raising an autistic child. Granted, I was jet-lagged when I saw it, which probably explained why I was teary-eyed for much of the film. The movie, is very much a character film. It tackles every aspect of Nathan's life and that of the people around him. The film manages to be a family drama, a coming of age movie with a dash of romance, and a comedy at the same time. It all seamlessly fit together and keep you cast is out of this world. The group of young actors they chose is simply impressive because they are all so natural that it's easy to believe that they are the characters they're portraying. Asa Butterfield is wickedly talented and morphed into Nathan for the duration of the Matthews' background in documentary film-making has a huge impact on how realistic and natural the film feels. The film really shows a wide spectrum of teenagers, among the socially awkward, quirky, math prodigy children. He conveys a strong message by showcasing these kids as they are and not falling into common Brilliant Young Mind is a gem that I would recommend to every one. Uk, Comedy, Drama In my reviews I have observed on more than one occasion that the Brits don't know how to make a bad film. Their challenge is usually in making a great is a case in point. Technically perfect, with a script so polished it gleams, and acting so sharp that even the secondary roles stay in your head long after the credits character is a young boy with Autism who, as a result, may or may not be a world class math prodigy. The point of the story however is not whether his character will win a math Olympics but rather if he will ever become a functioning human in a cast of greats, stands out. Has a great career ahead of him, he has mastered the art of delivering dialog with his wonderful Sally Hawkins Poppy in the unforgettable Happy Go Lucky does a great job in a difficult role as the mother. Since Butterfield's character as written is constantly ignoring his mother, there is a tendency for the audience to do so as well. Hawkins does not allow is an excellent film, more a journey than a destination, and therefore not for favourite scene - the one I will remember for a very long time - is Butterfield with his almost Chinese girlfriend, eating some container is opened and the number of comestibles inside is NOT a prime number. The audience by that point has been trained to know this will be a cause of great discomfort for the boy, who likes his meals pre-sorted in prime girl notices his discomfort and he quickly explains the problem to her. With no hesitation she grabs one of the items and wolfs it down solved! It is a microcosm for the film - start with an impossible boy, add a naturally joyful and spontaneous young woman, and the result is ... serendipity.

Asa Butterfield is perfect in the title role and has a strong cast of professional performers to compliment his performance. Prolific playwright James Graham’s debut screenplay is exceptional in almost every detail and carries the viewer through a rollercoaster ride of human emotions - as his youthful characters, etc, navigate unfamiliar human experiences. Solid direction and stylish cinematography keep it all on track, with Martin Phipps’ haunting music score nicely setting the moods for each scene. Sally Hawkins gives yet another of her introspective performance as Butterfield’s widowed mother - with good support from Rafe Spall Life of Pi as Butterfield’s somewhat tortured mentor. Nathan's mother Sally Hawkins doesn't quite know how to reach her son, but hiring a math genius Rafe Spall who once competed in the Olympiad himself has been good for the teen. But more change is in the offing. Is It Any Good? A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND isn't exactly brilliant, but it is a heartfelt, thought-provoking, well-acted drama. Central to the story is young Nathan's isolation, and Butterfield brings his character's complicated struggles to life in an authentic, heartbreaking way. The film takes a detour to China, which is interesting and adds a layer of complexity to the plot - but the characters Nathan meets there are, with one exception, very much single-note.
