BY RICK VAN HORN FROM THE WINTER 2018 ISSUE OF DRUM! Let’s face it As drummers, we need to be 50 percent musicians and 50 percent mechanics. No other instrumentalists employ as many mechanical devices as we do in order to create our performance. Ironically, the very act of performing on a drum set creates stresses that can, in turn, cause its mechanical components to fail — often at the most inopportune time. What’s more, in addition to being the most mechanical of instruments, a drum set is also the most visual. Its appearance is an important part of a drummer’s entertainment value. But that appearance can be adversely affected by environmental factors encountered during performances. What this all boils down to is something that one of my first drum teachers drilled into me “Take care of your drum set, and it’ll take care of you.” We will show you how to clean drums and other steps you can take in order to keep them in a good shape. Let’s begin! Cover the kit Before we teach you how to clean drums, you can take some precautions to avoid getting them dirty in the first place. If you’re not careful about how you store your kit, it’s easy for dust to build up and damage its finish over time. It has been known to cause drum kits to develop cracks, which can lead to complete destruction of the drum kit. It also causes the drums to lose their tone and resonance, making them sound dull and lifeless. This is why it’s important to learn how to store a drum set and protect it from dust at all times. For most drummers, the appearance of their kit is very personal. That’s why there are so many different finishes available in wraps, lacquers, stains, or other styles. But no drum finish looks good if it’s dingy or dusty. If your drums are left set up for long periods, keep them dusted. Better yet, keep them covered. A simple bedsheet or lightweight painter’s drop cloth will do the job here. This is especially important if your kit is set up in a club where the air quality isn’t great. Fortunately, cigarette smoke is a thing of the past in most clubs and restaurants, but if food grease is in the air that can create a film on your drum’s finish pretty quickly. How to clean drums step by step Even if you take all the precautions and store your drums properly, they will get dirty eventually, especially if you use them frequently and move them from place to place. That’s when cleaning drums comes. Here are the steps you can take when you start cleaning drum kit. Step 1 Wipe it down The first thing you should do when you start cleaning drum kit, preferably after each playing, is to wipe down each part of the drum. Use a microfiber cloth and wipe down the drums gently so you don’t damage the surface. Wipedowns with a clean cloth and some Windex can remove grease and other dirt from drums and hardware. However, not every Windex product is safe for your drums! You should avoid ones with Ammonium Hydroxide because it can discolor and damage your equipement. Step 2 Full-scale cleaning You should do a full-scale cleaning of your drums from time to time. This involves completely dismantling them. Here is how to clean drum shells and hardware. Set the lugs and rims aside for the moment, and then use a quality drum polish on the shells. There are several drum cleaners on the market for this, including Trick Drum Polish, Dunlop Drum Shell 65 Polish, and Music Nomad Drum Detailer. Household cleaners and polishes like Pledge can work well, too. You can also use some household items such as vinegar or dish soap. You should mix it with water, and clean the drums gently with a lint-free cloth. Take care to dry all drum parts after the cleaning! You can gently wipe them with a clean and dry cloth after you finished. Step 3 Lube up the bearing edges While you’re looking at the shells, it’s a good time to examine the bearing edges. If they’re in good shape, you should lubricate them to aid in drumhead seating and tuning. Drum Dial offers its Bearing Edge Conditioner for this purpose. Some drummers use a lightcoat of wax. Step 4 Spiff up the chrome When it comes to cleaning chrome hardware, you can generally use the same products that you do on the drum shells. Just make sure to get the polish thoroughly out of all the little nooks and crannies on lugs and stands. In these cases, it’s best to put the polish on your cloth first rather than directly onto the part. Step 5 Clean the tension rods While the tension rods are out of the lug casings, be sure to wipe them off thoroughly to remove any rust or grit that would affect their ability to operate smoothly. Once they’re completely clean, a drop or two of oil, such as 3-in-1 oil, wiped back on will lubricate them and protect them from future oxidation. Step 6 Maintain that new cymbal smell Years ago many drummers were reluctant to ever clean their cymbals, holding the opinion that the cymbals’ sound “mellowed” with age and accumulated dirt. But that was before there were so many different cymbal manufacturers offering so many different specific models. If you want your cymbals to keep sounding like they did when you bought them, you should keep them looking like they did when you bought them. If you are wondering how to clean cymbals with household items, you can simply use vinegar, lemon juice or dish soap. Scrub them gently with a cloth or even wth a toothbrush for a deeper cleaning. Cleaning cymbals with ketchup is also possible, believe it or not, but is not as efficient as other methods such as cleaning cymbals with lemon or vinegar. Step 7 Polish makes perfect Fortunately, cymbals are relatively easy to keep looking new. Every major manufacturer offers its own brand of cymbal cleaner and/or polish, and there are a number of excellent after-market brands such as Groove Juice or Zims. Each is an easy-to-apply liquid that removes dirt and tarnishes quickly. Just be aware that there are cleaners, there are polishes, and there are combinations thereof. Polishes alone generally won’t deep clean a dirty cymbal; cleaners alone won’t create a lasting shine. Some polishes are specific to “brilliant” cymbals that may have a coating to protect their finish. Also, some cleaners will remove ink along with dirt, so be careful around logos. Tips for drum kit maintenance Apart from cleaning drum set, you should do some extra work to keep your kit in a good shape. Here are the tips for drum kit maintenance which will help you avoid the usual damage that can happen to your drums. 1. Don’t scratch the surface Remember that with a wrapped finish, you’re cleaning a plastic surface. On a lacquered kit, you’re polishing several layers of clear lacquer. Only in very rare cases, like with some oil finishes, are you actually touching natural wood, in which case you should use a high-quality wood furniture polish. In any event, you never want to use anything abrasive that might scratch the finish. Soft cloths and non-abrasive polishes work best. 2. Refresh your heads regularly Before you reassemble your now-clean drums, take a serious look at your drumheads. Heads aren’t designed to last forever, and worn-out heads can’t provide optimum sonic performance. Batter heads that are pitted, or coated models that have their coatings worn smooth and thin, should be replaced. 3. Don’t forget about bottom heads Bottom heads can lose their tensile strength as the plastic material stretches over time. This is best evaluated when the head is put back on the drum. If you can’t tune it evenly, or if it doesn’t seem to give the drum the resonance that it should, you might want to consider replacing it. 4. Tighten the screws Be sure to see that all the screws holding the parts of the pedals together are securely in place. On a recent gig, my bass drum pedal started to feel very spongey and I couldn’t get any impact on the drum. At first, I figured that the hoop clamp had let go, but it turned out to be the footboard that was moving. It was still attached to the chain, but swinging left and right, completely free of the baseplate. The machine screws holding the heel plate of the footboard to the baseplate had worked loose and fallen out. 5. Check the beater Before you attach your pedal to the bass drum, take a moment to examine it thoroughly. Check to see if the beater shaft is clamped tightly. Make sure the beater head is firmly attached to the shaft. If the head is held by a nut, tighten it. If it’s machine-fixed, make sure it isn’t loosening up. 6. Drive by If you use a chain-drive pedal, make sure that the bolts connecting the chain to the axle and to the footboard aren’t wearing through. Likewise for a direct-drive linkage, as metal connectors can wear out too. On strap-drive models, straps will wear thin where they bend around the tip of a footboard, and their adjusting holes can stretch out around the bolts that connect them to the footboard and to the axle. You should carry replacement straps in your stick bag for this eventuality. 7. Spring forward If your pedal’s spring is exposed, be sure to check it. The weak spot on a spring is at each end, where it connects to the axle and to the tension adjustment. If the “hook” of the spring is starting to wear thin, replace the spring. You should also carry spare springs. 8. Examine the hinges Hinges should be oiled regularly, but they need more attention than that. A hinge is designed to move up and down — which is the action that the hinge connecting a heel plate to the rest of the footboard should have. Unfortunately, many drummers don’t play exclusively in an up-and-down motion; many move their feet from side to side as well. Consequently, the hinges — especially the hinge pins — receive a sideways torque they weren’t designed to withstand. The pins can become weakened, and the hinges themselves can get “stretched out,” causing the connection between the heel plate and the footboard to become loose and sloppy. Such a hinge should be replaced. If left uncorrected, the hinge will ultimately break, rendering the pedal useless. Give regular check-ups In just the past couple of years, I’ve discovered — and had to fix — problems with hi-hat clutches, cymbal tilters, tom holders, rack clamps, case straps, and even the wheels on my rolling hardware bag. Some I caught before they failed; others caught me. But in each case, it reinforced my belief in yet another old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So do yourself a favor and give your kit regular check-ups. That way, you’ll be able to deal with problems before they ruin your gig. WD40 bisa dibeli di toko bangunan seperti Ace Hardwares dan juga pasar swalayan. 2. Secara umum, pemakaian WD 40 ketika disemprotkan jangan langsung ke drum-nya, melainkan oleskan ke KAIN HALUS terlebih dulu, baru kemudian digosokkan ke drum. 3. Saya sarankan agar sobat drummers menyediakan waktu sekitar 10-15 menit per-PIECE drum nya, jadi misalnya drum kamu ada 5pcs..siapkan wktu minimal 1 jam! “Wah..1 jam untuk 5pcs? Lama banget bro ?” Betul guys..ini supaya bener-bener bersih maksimal. Lagipula, seperti yang saya bilang sebelumnya, bahwa bersihin drum sudah merupakan komitmen kita. Gosok hingga kotoran yang menempel copot.. WD40 yang dipakai cukup sedikit saja. 5. Untuk bagian badan drum shell bila terbuat dari bahan selain logam tidak perlu digosok dengan WD40. Untuk shell yang dari logam, bisa dibersihkan dengan cara yang sama seperti sudah di jelaskan di atas. Untuk shell dari kayu/acrylic, bisa digosok pake kaos dan air hangat. 6. Untuk bersihin drum secara TOTAL kotor banget, pertama-tama yang dilakukan adalah copot hoops/rims dan semua tension rods dari shell drum tersebut. Dengan cara begini, maka proses pembersihan sluruh hardwares ini akan lebih menyeluruh dan maksimal. 7. Bila drum sudah berkarat, pembersihan harus menggunakan kompon putih + amplas halus. Bisa dibeli juga di toko bangunan. Gosok kompon putih hanya pada bagian yang berkarat saja. 8. Bila karat timbul pada bagian shell drum yang logam, sebaiknya jangan digosok dengan kompon, karena akan merusak tampilannya.

Affiliate Link Many household cleaners are effective at cleaning the drums especially dishsoap. Never use ammonia, bleach, or any abrasive cleaners. There’s more to know–we’ll get into specific cleaners you can use and which ones to avoid. Let’s get your kit sparkling clean again! Man… I gotta say, though. I didn’t anticipate this topic being quite so controversial. Lots of people have their go-to cleaners and methods they use which they swear by, while others will say that those methods will destroy your drums. I tried to find materials that were effective as well as non-dangerous for your drums. Be careful! Always start with more dilution with more gentle cleaners. What Household Items Can I Use to Clean the Drums? You’ve got a busy life and you don’t want to spend too much time finding specialty tools or equipment to clean your drums. I’ll go through the different parts of the kit and we’ll talk about what things you can use to clean each part. Drumheads Drumheads are often made with synthetic materials, particularly Mylar, but some other polymer and even Kevlar. Occasionally they can be made from animal skins, such as goat or cow hide. Water Before you reach for your cleaning cabinet, I’d recommend using a lint-free cloth and using a little bit of water first. Water is a polar molecule and just by itself it can loosen dirt and other particles, and you may find that’s all you need to clean your drumheads. Even if you have animal skin drumheads, water is probably the safest way to go. A little can do everything you need–animal skins can expand and contract if gotten wet so make sure you don’t play your animal skin drumheads for an hour or two after you clean them. I actually did an experiment cleaning bongo drums with animal skin drumheads… if you’d like to see a difference in cleaning with water and cleaning with oil I did a comparison here The Best Way to Clean Your Bongos The Great Bongo Cleaning Experiment Hand Soap Hand soap is awesome because it’s designed to be less aggressive because it’s meant to be used on your hands. However, it has the annoying fragrance that often accompanies it. Which is kind of less than ideal. Even if it’s safe for your hands doesn’t mean it’s the best for your drums. But it should be fine if you only add a tiny drop to a cup of water or so. If you want a better chance of cleaning your drumheads without smelling like lavender, a better option is to use fragrance-free hand soap. Windex Be careful! Read this twice! Not all Windex is safe to use on your drums! Not all Windex is safe to use on your drums! Windex is a brand name, and so there are tons of different cleaners out there, all with “Windex” on the label. Windex Glass Cleaner, for example, has listed as one of its ingredients Ammonium Hydroxide. In other words, Ammonia with water. Ammonia can be detrimental to your drum heads and can discolor and even damage them. There are some Windex labels that use vinegar instead–I would still caution against vinegar. I was trying to do research on the effects of vinegar on mylar, and some report that mylar window film is damaged by vinegar cleaners but especially ammonia cleaners. The multi-surface cleaning bottle should be safer, but I would say skip Windex and try something safer first for cleaning your drumheads. This applies to Mylar drumheads, but it’s especially true for animal skin drumheads. If you wouldn’t use it for your hands, you probably don’t want to use it for your drum skins. Dishsoap This is a tough one because dishsoap can have some strong surfactants stuff that breaks down other stuff and helps them to be carried away by water that can damage your drumheads. However, if you water down your soap, like a drop for 4 cups, that can give you a little extra cleaning power without damaging your drumheads. Don’t pour two cups of water on your drumheads, by the way. 🙂 Use a lint-free cloth. Drum Shells This is probably the most tricky section because drum shells can come in so many materials and be treated with so many different types of finishes, varnishes, lacquers, etc. The key here is to use the least aggressive cleaner and go from there. Use a microfiber rag–Pearl says that paper towels are too abrasive. If you really want to have a successful cleaning session, you’ll have to take off all the chrome hardware. I share a video later on in the hardware section that goes through the process of how to do that. Furthermore, if you have a chrome plated snare, you can refer to the below hardware section as the materials are similar. Water As like the rest of the drumset, try a slightly damp rag to clean your drum shells. Be careful– water left on your drum shells can damage the lacquer finish. Make sure to dry your drum shells completely after cleaning. Dishsoap A diluted dishsoap does have some surfactants and detergents, so even with dishsoap you need to make sure and add enough water a drop in a quart should be plenty to make sure you don’t damage your drums. This should be plenty to remove any dirt or other grime that your drum shells may have picked up over time. Don’t Use Windex Windex does come in many different forms these days, but traditional glass cleaner will damage your drums, if not immediately, definitely over time thanks to the ammonia. In general, Windex cleaners are going to be too aggressive to clean your drum shells and you’re better off using something else. Cymbals Cymbals are a different animal–they are made from brass inexpensive or customized bronze alloys. Although cymbals are made from brass or bronze copper, tin, zinc, they are sometimes given a lacquer finish to protect the cymbal from oxidation when a cymbal starts to “age” it starts to darken–this is actually a weakening of the cymbal in action. So, what you need to be careful of is to not damage any protective coatings as well as the metal itself. Again, do not use bleach or ammonia to clean your cymbals. Make sure you do not use abrasives so as to not damage the delicate grooves of the cymbal. You can use a non-abrasive cloth to along the grooves. Water Water by itself will not likely be able to restore a cymbal, but you should always try it first with an abrasive-free cloth. Make sure to always dry the cymbal completely if you do this. Also, avoid using hot water. Hot water or even just water at all can soften any lacquer or other coating. Best to avoid soaking the cymbal and using a non-abrasive cloth dampened with water first. Dishsoap As above, some dishsoap has some aggressive detergents, but if you water it down enough it’s a solid option that can clean your cymbals. Start as diluted as possible a drop per quart and slowly move upwards until you get the result you are looking for. When Life Gives You Lemons Clean your cymbals! This is an age-old trick that allows you to clean the oxidation off of your drum cymbals. I really wish I had known this for my first drumkit–the cymbal was so far oxidized that it was a dull brown. Cut a slice of the lemon and wipe the cymbal along the grooves–you are using the citric acid from the lemon, plus the water and the lemon pulp to wipe up the oxidation. How to Clean Cymbals With A Lemon - Does It Work? Life Hack for Drummers Paiste 505 I recommend not cutting your lemon on the cymbal and I do recommend putting a towel underneath because that oxidation is going to come off. You don’t want to leave an acid on your cymbals–make sure you clean off any lemon juice when you’re done with water. Make sure to dry your cymbals completely, though. Windex As I have mentioned above, you want to avoid any products with bleach or ammonia. Windex calls their ammonia Ammonium Hydroxide which is ammonia in water. Make sure to not use the traditional Windex Glass Cleaner. However, the other Windex types may be okay. The ammonia-free wipes, or the vinegar Windex are options that can work. Before you try any of these, just try warm water first. Barkeeper’s Friend Barkeeper’s friend is another common cleaner people use for various metals. It’s active ingredient is Oxalic acid same as drum cleaner Groove Juice, and it has some abrasive action in its powder form. Be very careful and do not use undue pressure on the cymbal when cleaning because Barkeeper’s friend is abrasive. You want to use as little pressure as possible. A little goes a long way. Make sure you wash your cymbals extra well after this so as not to let the acid damage the cymbals. What Not To Use Brasso It’s very common for people to reach for Brasso–this is a common household cleaner used for cleaning brass and for a number of other things. However Brasso has ammonia, which can weaken the protective coating of the cymbal. Hardware Just as in cleaning the drum shells, if you really want to clean your drum hardware, then it’s best to detach your hardware from you shells. The cleaners you can use are much different than what you should usefor your drum shells and to avoid the hassle of trying to avoid any contact with your drum shells, you should probably remove the hardware. Chrome, although a bit more tough than other parts of the drum, should not be used with abrasive cleaners as this can scratch the chrome which will shorten its life. Rust is the enemy! Keeping up with your drum will help the drum hardware last longer. Dishsoap Good old dishsoap and water! as always, don’t soak your chrome hardware, but with a rag and a little bit of dishsoap this will do well to remove any dirt or any particulates. Use a non-abrasive cloth and make sure to buff the chrome dry after cleaning. Turtle Wax Chrome Polish If you have a chrome polish, such as Turtle Wax’s Chrome Polish that you use for your car or other household products, this can be used for polishing the chrome on your drum hardware. Homemade Polish This is where this gets controversial, some people use lemon juice/vinegar and backing soda as a chrome cleaner. Although the pH is neutralized this method, they both can work together to polish the chrome, others use aluminum foil as a polishing abrasive. Use your best judgment– backing soda and vinegar pastes will be a bit gentler than other homemade methods. Goof Off/Goo Gone removing tape residue For one reason or another, you may find that your chrome hardware has that terrible tape residue. You can use goo gone or goof off as a way to get this tape residue off. Make sure and clean the chrome thoroughly after using these chemicals–goo gone in particular has kerosene in it. Some swear by kerosene as a chrome cleaner, but probably not something you want to leave there. What About Windex? Windex is probably gentle enough to not cause a real issue, but I would still avoid using glass cleaner because of the ammonia–ammonia will eventually work its way through that chrome plating.
